Growing Up
Responsibilities, working 40 hour weeks, hefty decisions, all trade-offs for being 'free' adults. Occasionally I long for that unencumbered imagination and carefree youth but then reality kicks in. Do I really want to go through High School again? NO WAY! Today, while I've been shut indoors, The Sam Noble Museum of Natural History has been having fun and enjoying the sunshine.
During my lunch escape, I was enthralled by the tipi in front of the museum. Even in its western flare, I got a kick out of it.
On my way back to my cave I wandered over and caught a brief demonstration on making arrowheads. I wanted to stay longer, but I started to feel quite inquisitive and my free time had run out. Duty calls. While I was slaving away they were having a tipi pitching demonstration, I would have traded the arrowhead demo to witness the tipi pitch. Damn. Can't win 'em all. Maybe this weekend will make up for this loss? As my mother always said "Life's not fair." Here's to hopin' at least the sun will be available this weekend!
Watercolor and Pen
Last night I picked up a palette of shiny, new watercolors.
This was a huge upgrade (a whole $5). I went from a 1960's set of primaries to countless shades and tints. This helped a bit with my artistic wane. This is also a product of my spring fling:
I drew these one morning while sitting on the deck, sipping tea. These are my grandfather's grills. Each morning I'd sit on the porch and read or sketch and one day I questioned the need for three, gas grills? Three right in a row, seemed excessive. It made me smile and chuckle a bit, I had to draw them. After I sketched them, I later noticed a smoker below the deck, WOW! I guess it's good to have backups? I brought this home and water-colored it last night. I threw in some ink and Voila! After I finished this piece I started something new and improvised. I was on a roll:
This is a greeting card for my great-great aunt, Janie and uncle, George. They sent me a Valentine's day card and I've yet to respond (shameful). Last night it was high time to make up for lost time. I don't think it comes near George's talent but I know he will appreciate it! Not too shabby? I think the St. Patty's day cupcake really created a spark (Cupcakes make my world go 'round)!
Winter Loot
I promised the scoop on the treasures I found on my short, spring fling. Again, they are far from fabulous and they didn't cost me a penny, just some expended calories and allergies.
While spring brings life, winter buries the dead. I found these at separate ponds. Poor dears.
While I didn't necessarily find these on my nature hikes, I managed to complete them during my stay. At night, my pup and I would cozy up to the heater and just relax (in silence). Not a creature was stirring and not a care in the world.
This was the first one. I found a little scrap of elastic trim that inspired me to turn it into a bridge.
These two came later, the last night of my stay. Much more care and intention went into these. All three of these pieces are a mere, 3x4". They are the beginning of a new project. Many steps left before completion but I'm spilling early, you're lucky!
It was a nice trip. I came back with some mementos of nature and life (or death) as well as some work in progress. Upon return, I immediately felt stressed. Even the work I did made me feel like I need to hurry and finish. I came back with a sketchbook full of ideas but it only seemed to add to my ills. Now I feel overwhelmed and unmotivated. To much, so much, where to begin? Art is tough, you have all these unrelated ideas and as you start a new piece it on usually pushes you in new directions leaving all those documented ideas to rot in the sketchbook. It's disheartening and perhaps a product of my recent negativity. Perhaps I should focus on the possibilities of the 'new directions' and consider the other sketches excess baggage? Easier said than done. I'm experiencing 'writer's block,' I could use a new moon.

Backwoods Okie
I made my escape to Sparks, Oklahoma Saturday morning. I packed up the ice chest, among some other" necessities"-crafts/reading. I also hauled with me, a detailed description on how to 'de-winterize' the cabin. The accommodations were meager. Although I did have electricity, I had to fetch my water from a hose at the end of the property by way of five gallon buckets. I'm not complaining, I was just happy to have a few days of peace. There is something rewarding about living beyond materials and technology. Breathing fresh air leaning to be content just sitting alone (or with a four legged furry). I didn't even turn my iPod on which was surprisingly easier to toss that I would have imagined. The first night I was there the stars were unbelievable. Being smack dab in the center of 80 acres, no city lights, no porch lights and a clear sky-it's like nothing I've ever experienced. I felt like I could reach up and grab one of those balls of fire. I could see colors, yellows and reds, it's difficult to describe. I'd tolerate cloudy days if every night were that vivid.
It was pretty gray the entire time I was out there. It wasn't too cold but the sun only peeked through the clouds a few times. I have never been out to the cabin prior to the dreaded Oklahoma summer but being there mid March was a treat, maybe even a new tradition. Not only were the stars incredible it was also silent. No cicadas/locust, no crickets, nothing. Since spring has yet to bloom, animals weren't fussing about sex. It was blissful. I would have liked more sunshine but as I said, the starry nights made up for that deficit. Sun or not, I took lots of walks around the property. By night I sat in front of the small heater and read or embroidered. That's about it. Nothing glamorous. The photos speak for themselves.
The cabin was encountering a ladybug infestation. When I'd wake up in the morning I'd notice them crawling on the ceiling. I'd lie there on my back watching the patterns shift. It was better than watching Oprah.
Red canyons. I love the way the cedars contrast with our red dirt. This photo proves there was occasional sun.
Splitting.
I found the pond. Actually, I found three ponds. Two of them blessed me with some loot. That's for later, a post about the treasures from my excursion.
My grandmother told me there were plenty of books to read out there. I found this on next to the toilet. How convenient?
I had to 'shoot' this (no pun intended). This is our Okie shooting range. A mound of dirt, some skeet and some pop cans. I know, I know, guns are bad. But I will admit there's nothing like pulling the trigger on the 357 and watching that can soar. There's nothing funny about it but it sure is exhilarating. At the end of the day, ears ringing, I realized how small I am, how small WE are. I felt connected for a moment and then it back on the highway-my home. BANG!

Back in the Saddle
Back to work. I took a short trip to the boonies and I'm back-clean and back to routine. Last Friday we had a lunch date to celebrate several family birthdays and we messed around in OKC a bit.
[Cousin Katy. Aunt Jenni. Mom. Me.]
I also handed these over to Katy. My mom and I framed them in cedar and stained them fairly dark. I'm always weary of dark stain but it turned out great with the light plywood.
The contrast is fantastic. Now she'll just have to find a stud and she's good to go. I had a nice, long, relaxing weekend. There's not much to cover but I will provide a short run through later for those interested. I actually contemplated just giving up everything and roughing it in the woods. Numbers even ran through my head,"how much money would I really need to make it out here?" It was tough waking up to reality this morning. Back to the grind. I did gather plenty of inspiration to keep me going for awhile. Until next time...

Out of Pocket
Gig is on! I'm out to the country until Wednesday. I'm wound so tight right now I can hardly see straight. Endless list, things to do before I skip town and what I NEED to survive in the wild.
Book-check. Keys-check. Sketchpad-check. I think I'm good to go. Wish me luck, it may get messy! I'll be in dire need of a shower upon return. If you're bored you can try and find me!

Digital Fun
It's been awhile since I've played around with CS4. It comes in phases. Sometimes I can't get enough of pattern making in illustrator or superimposing in photoshop. It's also something I can to do burn time while I'm at work. I should clarify a bit about my job. Aside from the fact that it's not my career, it's a decent job. I get a lot of free time. Working in IT support is like working triage in the ER. Everything manages to go wrong at once. In between emergencies, I have free time- time to blog, time to search for recipes and time to learn the ins and outs of starting a garden (yes, I'm considering planting some greens). This morning I decided to manipulate a photo that appeared in my inbox.
My aunt, Berta, is in town for a visit and we are having lunch today to celebrate several family birthdays (including hers). She sent me this photo from a dinner we had a few nights ago so I decided to manipulate it and I plan to grab a frame for it before the lunch gathering. It makes for a nice 'instant' birthday gift. I used a couple of old photos from the "Belt Clothing Store" that was run by her father and his brothers. I'm not big on photo manipulation, especially when it involves hokey scenes and family photos. But, since she sent me the original I decided to have some fun with it. I look forward to lunch with the Belt womyn. It's always a riot-A great way to bow out of this week! XoXo.
